It’s What A Lot of Oregon Residents Do

Running in the great Northwest is a good way to elevate your mood and keep your cardiovascular system in tip-top shape. I mean just picture yourself feeling the crisp, cool, morning breeze blowing against your face as you run or jog down a scenic trail in Northwest Oregon. And you can’t ignore the luscious, green terrain that Oregon has to offer. It paves the way for all those awesome, scenic trails, making those long runs worth every step.

Oregon has over 200 miles of running trails and is ranked as one of the best places to run by Active.com. Some of the most common running trails are along the Willamette River, which is a couple miles from downtown. All the bridges in downtown are accessible for runners including the Tilikum Crossing also known as The Bridge of the People. This bridge is not accessible to private cars. Only runners, trains, streetcars, buses, cyclists and pedestrians use this bridge to cross over the Willamette River.

Battling The Cold Weather

Running and cold weather go hand in hand for obvious reasons. Not only does this vigorous exercise keep you warm but you also burn more calories when you run in cold weather. Why? Because your body works harder to keep you warm when you exercise in cold weather. Shivering can actually burn around 100 calories in 15 minutes. “The colder the weather, the less heat stress on the body. This makes it a lot easier to run.

Running in cold weather can also help prevent seasonal affective disorder also known as S.A.D. If you’re living in Oregon then you know all about the dreary weather conditions here. Rain, overcast, rain, overcast. Yeah, it can stay like that nine months out of the year. You either love it or you hate it. This type of weather can hit hard for people who prefer a more sunny climate but can’t relocate right away for whatever reasons. If this is you then running is highly recommended as it can significantly reduce the symptoms of S.A.D. When you run your body releases all the feel-good chemicals known as serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins. These chemicals are your body’s natural antidepressants.

Did you know that most people tend to move less and eat more during the colder months of the year? It’s understandable. I mean who doesn’t want to stay snuggled up underneath their thick, warm comforters during the freezing, cold winter months, watching their favorite T.V. episodes and snacking on apple slice cookies and pretzel bites. Just one more good reason to hit those running trails and keep the extra weight off

Join The Crowd in Oregon

Has it been a while since you’ve hit the running trails? Maybe you’re overworked and haven’t made the time to just get out there and do some serious cardiovascular exercise. We’ll now is the time. You owe it to yourself to take care of YOU. No one else will do it for you. Right? I would recommend You consider joining a running group in your area. Why? Because people are more likely to stick to their commitments and goals when other people are involved.

It’s so easy to get complacent when you’re working on fitness goals by yourself. Having other people around to support you makes all the difference in the world. A simple calendar reminder or a phone call from your running group’s organizer can have you up and out the door in no time. Now, this is what I call motivation. Join Meetup and Meet New Friends While You Run

Every month you can find hundreds of people getting together on Meetup.com to participate in running scavenger hunts, 5k races, marathons, scenic runs through the park and all over Oregon. Some of the most common places for running groups to hit are Laurelhurst Park, Wildwood Trail by the Pittock Mansion, MT Tabor in S.E. Portland and of course the scenic running trails alongside the Willamette river near downtown Portland by The Convention Center.

If you haven’t heard of Meetup.com. I highly recommend you check this social site out. Meetup is all about connecting like-minded people together that have the same interest in common. This could be anything from sports activities, hobbies, running and more. On Meetup, It’s easy to find what you’re looking for. For example, if you’re looking for running groups in Oregon just type Oregon Running in their search bar and you should get a list of running groups and events taking place near you. This is by far one of the best ways I have found to meet new people all while doing something I enjoy doing. You can even start your own Meetup running group. It’s fun and very easy to set up. You’ll have to pay a small fee to run the group, but it’s certainly worth it.

Oregon certainly isn’t short of running trails so if you find yourself wanting to avoid the crowd because you have plenty of friends already you can always check out these following sites for a list of Oregon’s best hiking trails. There are so many to choose from, you can try a different running tail every day if you want.

Before The Run

Make sure to warm up before you run. Decide what works best for you whether it’s jumping jacks, marching in place, or hopping around for five minutes. These exercises will help prevent muscle strain and injuries to your joints. And don’t become a victim to frostbite. Always cover up your most vulnerable extremities, which include your hands and ears.

Exercise doesn’t come without its pains and gains. If you’re a runner I’m sure you’ve experienced sore muscles and cramped legs before.
